CREAM BUNS

A super delicious bun recipe filled with luscious cream. A childhood favourite and perfect for afternoon tea or dessert!

INGREDIENTS

4 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons instant yeast

½ cup granulated or powdered sugar

1 teaspoon salt

5 tablespoons butter, softened

1 egg, slightly beaten

½ cup water, lukewarm

1 cup milk, warmed

For Sugar Syrup Glaze

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup water

For Topping and Filling

Powdered sugar

Whipped cream

INSTRUCTIONS

In a mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Add butter, egg, water and use a wooden spoon or hand mixer fitted with dough hook on low speed to stir well very well.

Gradually add another 1/2 cup of flour and then the milk. Then again add the remaining flour bit by bit and use the dough hook to mix until the dough is beginning to pull away from the sides of the bowl.

Combine and knead the dough. Roll the dough into a ball, then place in a bowl coated with oil and cover it . Let it rise on the counter until doubled in size for about 30 minutes.

After the dough has risen, punch it down and let it rest for 5 minutes on a lightly floured surface.

Divide the dough into approx. same sized pieces.  Shape each piece into a round ball, and place onto a baking pan or tray lined with a parchment paper. Keep the balls with enough space between them to raise and not touch each other else they would loose the round shape.

Place the baking tray in a preheated oven to rise for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size. Once doubled, remove the tray and set aside.

Preheat the oven to 180 degree C and bake the buns for about 20 minutes or until golden brown.

While the buns are baking, prepare the syrup glaze by combining equal amounts of sugar and water in a small saucepan and cook just until it starts to boil and the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat.

Remove the buns from the oven and brush them with the glaze while they are still hot. Place on a rack to cool completely.

Prepare the filling by combining the cream and sugar and whisking till its firm.

When cooled completely, cut the buns almost all the way through and fill with whipped cream and dust with more powdered sugar. Serve and enjoy!
