WHITE BREAD

This white bread recipe is soft and delicious. A must-try recipe.

INGREDIENTS

Makes 2 loaves

2 1/4 teaspoon active dry yeast

2 1/4 cups warm water

1 tablespoon salt

1/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoon olive oil

5 1/2 cups maida/flour

butter for topping

INSTRUCTIONS

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water with sugar. When the yeast is bubbly, add the sugar, salt, oil, and 4 cups flour, and mix until smooth.

Add remaining flour (half cup at a time) to form a soft, smooth dough. The dough should stick just slightly to your finger when touched, but not be very sticky. Knead this for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth, then roll into a ball.

How to Knead : Sprinkle flour over the dry surface so the dough won't stick when it's time to knead. Prepare a counter-top, table, or another stable surface for kneading. Wash your hands before kneading.

Press the heels of your hands into the dough, pushing forward slightly. This is called "punching" the dough. Continue doing this until the dough is slightly springy.

Place the dough in an oiled bowl, turn over once to coat the top with oil and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise one hour, or until doubled.

When the dough has risen, punch it down gently and divide in half. Roll each half of the dough into a long rectangle.

Roll the dough up a flat surface, starting at the short edge, to form a cylinder. Repeat with remaining dough.

Place the dough, seam side down, into rectangular or bread pan that is greased with oil and cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise one hour, or until the dough is ½ - 1 inch higher than the top of the pan.

Preheat the oven to 190C. Bake for about 35 minutes, or once the loaves are brown and sound hollow when tapped.

Brush with melted butter. Remove to a cooling rack and cool before slicing.
