STAR BREAD

Surprisingly simple to make, this Nutella stuffed star bread topped with cinnamon sugar is an amazing dessert for your holiday celebrations and one that will disappear in a flash.



INGREDIENTS


3 and a ¼ cups all-purpose flour

2¼ teaspoon Yeast

1 teaspoon Salt

3 tablespoon granulated sugar

3 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened

1 cup warm Milk

1 Egg


For the filling and topping:

Nutella or any other filling of your choice

Egg and milk for eggwash

¼ cup powdered cinnamon and sugar


INSTRUCTIONS


In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, yeast, salt and sugar. Make a well in the middle and add the wet ingredients: butter, milk and whisked egg.


Mix the ingredients and once incorporated by using a dough hook fitted hand or stand mixer, the dough should be pulling away from the bowl. Move the dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover with cling/ plastic wrap and let it rest until doubled in size for about 1 and a half hours.


Remove the cling film/ plastic wrap. Deflate the dough by punching down lightly. Place the dough onto a floured surface and divide the dough into 4 equal portions using a knife or pizza cutter.


Take one portion at a time and roll into a circle. Repeat with the remaining 3 portions.

Now place one rolled portion on a baking / parchment paper. Spread 1 Tablespoon of Nutella. Repeat two more times, layering the dough and the nutella filling until you place the fourth layer.


Place a round cutter ( like the mouth of the glass or even the cap of the nutella bottle ) on top of the dough in the center. Make 16 spaced cuts using a knife or pizza cutter from the center circle to the edges ensuring the center is not cut.


Grab 2 adjacent strips, twist outwards twice and pinch the ends together. Repeat until you have 8 stars in total.


Place this along with the baking paper on a baking tray. Cover with soft towel or plastic and allow for a second rise for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 190 degree C.


Brush the bread with egg wash and bake for about 20 minutes until the top is golden brown.


Remove the star bread from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack. Dust with cinnamon sugar and serve warm.
